Constitutional Court rapporteur Osman Can has completed his report on a closure case filed against the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and will submit it to the Constitutional Court on Wednesday.
The closure case was filed against the AK Party on charges of anti-secularism by Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Prosecutor Abdurrahman Yalçınkaya on March 14 seeking closure of the AK Party and a ban on 70 of its high-ranking officials from belonging to a political party for five years, including Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ErdoÄan and former AK Party member President Abdullah Gül. Yalçınkaya and the AK Party presented their verbal defenses in court in early July.
After the submission of Can s report, it will be forwarded to the 11 members of the high court, and Constitutional Court President HaÅim Kılıç will determine a court date for the case. According to the Constitution, in order for the top court to ban the AK Party, it needs the approval of a qualified majority, namely seven out of its 11 members. The Constitutional Court can either close the party or deprive it partially or completely of Treasury funds. The closure case is expected to be concluded before the end of July.
