Prague- The Czech Senate may propose to the Constitutional Court that it reexamine the agreement on the recognition of the International Criminal Court (ICC), senator Jaromir Volny (the Civic Democratic Party, ODS), said.
On this account, at least some ODS lawmakers want to postpone the vote on it in the upper house.
Last month, prompted by the ODS, the Senate asked the Constitutional Court to examine whether the Lisbon treaty was consistent with the Czech constitutional order.
This was highlighted by Volny, a deputy chairman of the Senate constitutional and legal committee that has recommended the postponement.
Volny dismissed the media speculations that the postponement was to serve as a pressure on the Greens, a minor coalition government party, so that their deputies support the treaties on the U.S. radar base in the Czech Republic.
"I have not seen anything of this sort," Volny said.
Volny said he would like the unclear aspects of the ICC agreement to be explained.
However, he did not see any basic problems in it that should be checked by the Constitutional Court.
Social Democrat Ladislav Macak, another deputy chairman of the committee, said he did not think the agreement should be examined by the Constitutional Court.
"In my view, there is no real reason for this," Macak told CTK, adding that the treaty had been signed nine years ago.
The Czech Republic is the only European Union member state not to have ratified the Rome Statute on the establishment of the ICC.
Since 2002, the court has been dealing with the most serious international crimes such as crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression.
To be approved, the agreement should be supported by the constitutional majority in both houses of the Czech parliament which is three-fifths of deputies in the 200-member Chamber of Deputies and three-fifths of the 81-member Senate.
However, many Czech lawmakers, especially from the senior ruling ODS and the junior opposition Communist Party (KSCM), have raised objections to the Rome Statute.
The Chamber of Deputies is to start debating the agreement on Tuesday and the Senate at the end of May.
