MADRID, SPAIN - Constitutional Court on Tuesday ordered a new investigation into claims by a member of the militant Basque separatist group ETA that he had been tortured by police.
The earlier judicial investigation into the allegations presented by Alberto Viedma had been shelved prematurely, without looking carefully into all the evidence, the court said.
Viedma is serving a prison sentence for killing a local politician in Pamplona in 1998.
After his arrest in 2002, Viedma was taken to hospital for symptoms including dizziness, tachycardia and a slight erythema on the back.
ETA routinely accuses police of torture. International human rights groups have lent the claims credibility in some cases.
