LAHORE: Bars on Monday welcomed abolition of graduation condition for contesting parliamentary election.
Some of the bar representatives said the Supreme Court (SC) decision was purely based on the constitution.
Pakistan Bar Council Vice Chairman Syed Rehman said the decision was purely constitutional as the condition was not part of the constitution. He said the condition should have been abolished before the February 18 general elections.
Lahore High Court Bar Association President Anwar Kamal while praising the decision said there should be no qualification condition for parliamentarians. He said the decision was good, but he did not consider the SC legal. Punjab Bar Council member Sardar Khurram Latif Khan Khosa said the condition was not part of the constitution. He said the condition was only included in the election rules.
Lahore Bar Association President Manzoor Qadir said, âThe day the graduation condition for parliamentarians was introduced, lawyers have been terming it illegal and unconstitutional.â He said the condition should have been abolished before the February 18 general elections to let more people participate in the elections. He said the legal fraternity had reservations over the âlegitimacy of the SC judgesâ as they had taken oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order, but abolition of the graduation condition was appreciable.
